Project ZX Box made to concentrate efforts of everyone who wish to serf the Net with his/her or others people Speccy, or wants other people to do so. This project will run on Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K primarily, but should work on the later models. Hardware modifications should be minimal. Project (including the source code) is available for everyone, without any restrictions. Everybody who want to join, help with advice or just interested are welcome - just write to the address at the bottom of this page.

Today ZX Spectrum 48K is a very cheap computer. For example, i can easily get it for $1,5 and even cheaper. Besides, numerous Spectrums gathering dust on our shelves. Spectrum can be a cheap (or free for someone) hardware to serf the Net. Literally, ZX Spectrum is a small box, that can be connected to the home TV and powered only from small 5V power source. For many people it’s easier to get familiar with Spectrum rather with PC. Potentially, Spectrum is very convenient for Net surfing.

There are already some soft and hardware developed for Spectrum such as: different modem and RS-232 schematics, TCP/IP stack, PPP, some people writing browser. The most important thing is to concentrate effort and to make everything work together. Here is the plan as i see it:

    1. RS-232 scheme should be made as simple as it possible (in future, even ISA Ethernet card can be connected). To check the sound, standard external modem can be connected. For ZX Spectrum – 2400/9600 can be quite adequate.

    2. Dialer, which can perform PAP/CHAP authentication.

    3. As there are already sources for TCP/IP stack and PPP, they should be debugged and tested. It’s a good idea to make SLIP to make use of null-modem (PC can be a gateway machine then).

    4. User end programs. Firstly – FTP client, there is idea to load all other programs (and store everything) directly from the Net. This makes sense as all programs for Spectrum are small, besides there are numerous free hosting services.
